A Series of Unfortunate Events #10: The Slippery Slope by Lemony Snicket

30 Jan

My Rating:

Klaus and Violet find themselves in a difficult situation when their youngest sister Sunny is again held captive by Count Olaf and his henchmen. Forced to do their chores, including a variety of cooking and cleaning, Sunny uses this time to plot a way out of the groups’ clutches.

Meanwhile, Klaus and Violet explore the remains of V.F.D. headquarters, leading them to quite a few shocking discoveries. Using their heads, they try to solve the mystery of V.F.D. and the Quagmires. On top of it all, how will they help Sunny escape?

A Series of Unfortunate Events #9: The Carnivorous Carnival by Lemony Snicket

19 Jan

My Rating:

The story begins with Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire taking a ride in the trunk of Count Olaf’s car — willingly! The three siblings decide to use Olaf and his troupe to their own benefit. It’s obvious that Count Olaf knows more about their parents and V.F.D. than they do.

Once out of the trunk, they find themselves at a carnival. The three decide to disguise themselves as circus freaks — Violet and Klaus become a two-headed freak, and Sunny becomes a wolf-baby. Surely, they won’t be able to fool anyone… But oddly enough, they do! The three encounter quite a few obstacles this time around, including a foreign fortune teller, strange looking freaks, a crowd full of masochists, and of course Count Olaf himself.

A Series of Unfortunate Events #8: The Hostile Hospital by Lemony Snicket

12 Jan

My Rating:

The Baudelaire children are, for the first time, on their own. Not to mention, they are also wanted for a murder they did not commit. Everywhere they go, people have spotted them. They attempt to reach Mr. Poe with their status and whereabouts by telegram but are seemingly unsuccessful.

After once again being detected by the townspeople, the children jump into a van marked Volunteers Fighting Disease. Unfortunately, this is not quite the V.F.D. the three have been attempting to research.

A Series of Unfortunate Events #7: The Vile Village by Lemony Snicket

10 Jan

My Rating:

After their last escape from Count Olaf, Mr. Poe decides to take the phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child,” rather literally and place the three orphans in the care of a village called V.F.D. Could this be the very V.F.D. that the three have been trying to find?

The children find the village to be run by a counsel of elderly, who take their thousands of rules very seriously and have an intense passion for birds. In this case, the enormous amount of crows that cover their village. The counsel decides to leave the specific care of the children to Hector, the town handyman, who hates the counsel and secretly breaks their rules. (Though he is much to afraid of them to do anything about the unfair rules in the first place.)

A Series of Unfortunate Events #6: The Ersatz Elevator by Lemony Snicket

8 Jan

My Rating:

The Baudelaire orphans are on to their sixth maybe-family after being banned from boarding school. While Mr. and Mrs. Squalor are not relatives of theirs, the children can’t complain once they discover the couple lives in a 70 room penthouse apartment on the 66th floor of a nice (but oddly dark) neighborhood.

Unfortunately, as the story often seems to go, the children soon discover that the Squalor couple only buy and do things that are “in.” Elevators are “out,” and so the three begin their climb to the top of the penthouse to meet their soon-to-be parents. While their habits are odd, the children know they can’t complain if they have a bed to sleep in and nice food in their bellies.
